Pinterest works differently from Facebook or Instagram. Pins can keep showing up in searches long after you post them, which makes Pinterest a great fit for bakeries, venues, and other local businesses with photogenic products.
Boards connect like accounts
On other platforms you connect a whole account or Page. On Pinterest, each board connects like its own account. If you have a "Wedding Cakes" board and a "Cupcakes" board, each one shows up separately in your list of connected accounts, and you pick boards as targets in the post composer just like you would pick a Facebook Page.
This gives you fine control. One post can go to a single board, several boards, or a mix of boards and other platforms at the same time.
What every pin needs
- An image - required. Pins are visual, so a pin with no image cannot publish. The portal converts your image to JPEG automatically and offers crop presets.
- A title - each pin has its own title, separate from your post text.
- A destination link - optional, but strongly recommended (more on this below).
Why the destination link matters
The destination link is where people go when they click your pin. Without one, a pin is just a pretty picture. With one, every pin becomes a small doorway into your business.
For a local business, that is the whole point. Someone searching Pinterest for "birthday cake ideas" can click your pin and land right on your ordering page. Some examples:
- A cake photo linking to your order form
- A team-outing photo linking to your booking page
- A seasonal special linking to your menu page
- A finished project photo linking to your quote request page

One board per location
If your business has more than one location, create a Pinterest board for each location and connect each board separately. In the portal, you can assign each connected board to a location and then target posts by location group in the composer. That way your downtown shop and your second location each get their own pins.
Connecting and disconnecting
When Pinterest goes live in your portal, you will connect through Pinterest's own official login. The portal never sees your Pinterest password - it stores only an encrypted access token, which is deleted immediately when you disconnect. You can also revoke access from the Pinterest side at any time. In Pinterest, go to Settings > Security > Connected apps and remove the app there.
Get your boards ready now
- Make sure you can sign in to your Pinterest account.
- Tidy up your boards. Clear names like "Custom Cakes" or "Greenville Axe Throwing" work best.
- If you have multiple locations, create one board per location.
- Gather a few strong photos and note which page on your website each one should link to.
